Keeping COVID Prevention Plans Updated for Construction Workers in NYC

Continuing to take precautions and educate construction teams about COVID-19 prevention is crucial for New York City construction firms. As the state continues to reopen, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that COVID-19 is designated as an airborne infectious disease under the HERO Act, prompting important protocols that construction firms need to follow.

Many workers have just as many questions as they did during the first wave, like what precautions they should take as they’ve returned to the workplace and what facts exist about the vaccine. With the risk of misinformation and misunderstanding high, it’s more important than ever to provide easily accessible and clear information for employees.

Employers are required to update and review their Exposure Prevention Plan as required by the recently triggered HERO Act protocols to reflect current federal, state, and local guidance. In addition, employers must:

  • Disseminate the new plan to all team members and post a hard copy of the plan in a prominently visible worksite or office location, as well as ensure the copy is accessible during all work shifts
  • Verbally notify all employees of updates to the plan and where on worksite a copy of the plan is found
  • Designate a supervisory employee tasked with monitoring updates to federal, state, and local guidance regarding preventing the spread of COVID-19
  • Train all team members on all included elements of the updated plan
